When you think of Scotland, what comes to mind? The stunning scenery of mountains, lochs, and lush valleys? That's exactly what my friend Fiona Cheng and I had in mind when we decided to embark on a motorcycle trip through the Scottish Highlands. The idea of exploring remote islands, camping under the stars next to towering mountains and quiet beaches, and riding through rugged landscapes was the perfect adventure we were seeking. So, we packed our motorcycle camping gear, including down sleeping bags, Merino wool layers, and GORE-TEX gear to keep us dry, and set off on our journey north.
Our first leg of the trip took us through the North Pennines in England, a remote and unspoilt area with breathtaking mountain passes and winding roads. As we made our way to the Scottish border, we stopped in the city of Edinburgh to prepare for the Highlands. Stocking up on midge spray and head nets was essential, as we had heard plenty about the pesky insects in the area. From Edinburgh, we headed towards the Isle of Skye, taking a longer route with quieter roads to fully immerse ourselves in the journey.
After a few hours of riding, we reached Loch Lomond, where the Lowlands and Highlands meet. The contrast of sleepy forests and rugged mountains was a sight to behold. We took a break at one of the villages and ventured onto a white sandy beach, only to be met with crowds of people. Eager to continue our adventure, we hopped back on our Tiger 900 Rally Pro and encountered two fellow adventure riders heading to the famous Skyfall Valley, the filming location of a James Bond movie.
Deciding to take a detour through Glen Etive, also known as "Sky Valley," we were in awe of the beauty that surrounded us. The 12-mile single-track road led us deep into the heart of the Scottish Highlands, with minimal traffic and stunning vistas at every turn. Despite its short length, the road was packed with the wild and rugged charm that Scotland is known for.
As we continued our journey through the Highlands, we found ourselves camping in remote locations, surrounded by nature's beauty. Our motorcycle camping gear proved to be essential, providing us with comfort and protection as we embraced the elements. From setting up camp next to towering mountains to waking up to the sound of waves lapping at quiet beaches, every moment was a reminder of the magic of motorcycle camping.
Exploring Scotland on two wheels allowed us to experience the country in a unique and intimate way. Riding through winding roads, passing through quaint villages, and camping under the stars brought us closer to the rugged landscapes and rich history of the Scottish Highlands. It was a journey filled with adventure, camaraderie, and unforgettable moments that will stay with us forever.
